DO WE UNDERSTAND? by Jean Kay

DO WE UNDERSTAND?

I find English often needs translating from old language styles into what is understood better today. Bible verses, especially, can get lost in the meaning and interpretation. Here is my attempt to translate my two favorite bible readings.

Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness, for His name’s sake.

There is so much power, guidance, and peace of mind provided in that one small section of psalm from that big ancient book.
Are we translating the messages so they have meaning for life today?

My translation:
God takes care of me and provides my every need
He allows me to rest in the assurance of abundance
He quenches my thirst for a gentle flow in life
He re-energizes the spirit of my being
He will guide me on the right path, I just need to stay aware of  His presence.

The most recited poem in the bible is The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Here is my interpretation which is in my book Morning Light.

My Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, dear Father, Whose heaven’s on earth,
we’re all in Your kingdom, we have been since birth.
Help us to stay on our own unique path
that is the way we’ll be free from all wrath.
You provide everything we’ll ever need,
help us to share and not be filled with greed.
Forgive us, dear Father, when we go off track,
whenever we stray – we can always come back.
Lead us from temptation that’s in every hour,
help us to know You’re the source of our power.
Fill us with love, every minute, each day,
love always comes back when we give it away.
For You, our dear Father, are our very breath,
through You is eternity – there is no death.
Help us believe that – to know that it’s true,
for the power and glory come only through You.
Amen!

I sang that interpretation onto my page many years ago and have sung it silently every night since. It helps me to have a good sleep.

SIGHTING OWLS – A poem by Jean Kay

For day 20 of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) “I challenge you to write a poem that uses at least five of the following words:…” I chose to use owl, miraculous, elusive, ghost, twice.

SIGHTING OWLS

Owls can be elusive

camouflaged by surroundings.

Most are nocturnal

flying silently in the dark.

Like a ghost they swoosh by.

Twice while out walking

I’ve heard owl hoots,

but dusk was closing in,

I could not see it.

Owl’s have forward-facing eyes,

they can only see straight ahead.

They can swivel their whole head

almost completely around

to see beside or behind them.

That’s miraculous.

PICK ME – A cat ad poem by Jean Kay

Day 19 NaPoWriMo – prompt “Write a poem in the form of a personal ad! Or, if you like, try any kind of want ad.  Here is mine.

PICK ME!

Poomba

They named me Puffball Poomba
they call me Poomba, for short.
I’m soft, cuddly and house trained
as it says on my report.

I ‘m as cute as a button
and I’ll try not to ever push yours.
I promise to stay out of your way
when you’re doing household chores.

I’m pretty good with children,
unless they tease me too much.
I like to be brushed and petted,
I enjoy a loving touch.

I play with balls and toys
good at tossing them around.
I prefer toys I can claw at
not ones with a squeaking sound.

You know you want to adopt me
and I’d love to live at your house.
I like both wet and dry food
and the occasional mouse.

I need a home, you need a friend –
what could be better than that?
Pick me – you won’t be sorry,
I am an adorable cat.

And we did!

SOMETIMES – Anti-TV poem by Jean Kay

For Day 18 of National Poetry Month (NaPoWriMo) “Today’s prompt is to write a poem that begins and ends with the same word.”  Here is mine.

SOMETIMES

Sometimes I get so frustrated

with how TV shows are rated.

“G” is not always entertaining

or good for children we are training.

We are showing them it’s okay to fight

with any weapon they have in sight.

Bullying, sarcasm, senseless noise

is this what we want for our girls and boys?

When did “comedy” change definitions?

There’s nothing funny in the latest renditions.

PG and whatever number they use

are nothing I’d want children to choose.

I give up in trying to define

what I’ll enjoy and feel is fine.

I would sooner be outdoors

or even doing dreaded chores,

I prefer to be writing rhymes

Do I watch TV? Sometimes.

WELCOME – A poem by Jean Kay

For day 17 of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) “write poems of greeting. There’s lots of things you could greet. The subject’s up to you — now get out there and say “hello!”  Here is mine.

WELCOME

Welcome tiny, precious child.

Do you know how loved you are?

My loving bond will be with you

always, wherever you are.

I watched you come into our world.

I witnessed your first cry.

I heard words of joy from your parents,

like a comforting lullaby.

I recall the first time I held you

as my heart burst open with pride.

Your tight grip around my finger

confirmed love I felt inside.

Ten fingers, ten toes, beautiful eyes,

soft, fine, lovely dark hair,

I’d forgotten I could love that much.

What a privilege to be there.

Such an honour to be your Granny,

I’ll be able to watch you grow,

and give you hugs and kisses,

teach you some things I know.

This reads like a new arrival, but

my precious girl is almost ten.

I can relive those treasured moments

in my mind, time and again.

SEEKING PEACE – A pantun poem by Jean Kay

For Day 15 of National Poetry Month (NaPoWriMo) “I challenge you to write a pantun, which consists of rhymed quatrains (abab), with 8-12 syllables per line. The first two lines of each quatrain aren’t meant to have a formal, logical link to the second two lines, although the two halves of each quatrain are supposed to have an imaginative or imagistic connection.”  Here is mine.

SEEKING PEACE

I walk under a pink archway,

it’s cherry blossom season here.

Why is it that every day

I wait for troubled thoughts to clear?

I wish blossoms lasted longer,

beautiful magnolia too.

I hope each day to be stronger

To face what I know I must do.

Peace of mind comes in my garden –

puttering, watering, weeding.

He can’t push my buttons again

my instincts are interceding.

Twittering birds, a joyous sound,

I wonder what they are saying.

Awakened now as thoughts abound

I know I must keep on praying.

CINDERELLA HERE… – A persona poem by Jean Kay

For day 14 of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) “I challenge you to write a persona poem — that is, a poem in the voice of a particular person who isn’t you. But I’d like you to choose a very particular kind of person. How about a poem in the voice of a superhero (or a supervillain)?”  Here is mine.

CINDERELLA HERE…

I’ll do your chores as best I can,

but I believe God has a better plan.

He doesn’t want a good girl like me

to feel so trapped, I’m meant to be free.

Free to live a happier life

and maybe, one day, to become a wife.

My stepmother’s treatment is so unfair,

but I do a she asks and stay out of her hair.

My stepsisters are mean and condescending,

their hateful looks and words are never-ending.

I love time alone, when they’re all out,

I sit by the fire and dream about

how different my life will soon be

when somehow, someway I will break free.

I’ll keep wishing, hoping and praying,

for I know God can hear what I am saying.

He performs miracles and because I believe,

happiness, and a better life I will achieve.

I’ll be patient and work hard til the day

when my earned rewards will come my way.

BRISK WALK – A poem by Jean Kay

For day 13 of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) “Your prompt for today is simply to take a walk. Make notes — mental or otherwise — on what you see on your walk, and incorporate these notes into your poem.” Here is the poem I wrote this morning.

BRISK WALK

An avenue of hot pink magnolia

is awe inspiring to me,

huge, magnificent flowers

blooming on every tree.

A flock of about fifty Pine Siskins

in treetops chattering away.

I love watching them at our feeder

and wonder if they’re here to stay.

Daffodils are still standing tall

for another week or two,

they’ll die off then so summer plants

can have their season too.

Rose bushes are now in full leaf,

no sign of buds forming yet.

They know it’s not their time to bloom.

I hope my planters don’t get too wet.

Freshly mowed, bright green lawns

have been lapping up spring rain,

they give off a pleasing fragrance

and will need to be cut soon again.

A completely grey sky this morning,

high cloud cover, chill in the air.

I know my warm home awaits me

as my brisk walk takes me back there.

TANKA CHALLENGE – A tanka poem by Jean Kay

For day 11 of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) “I challenge you to write a tanka. This, like the “American” cinquain, is a poem based on syllables, with the pattern being 5-7-5-7-7.”  Here is mine.

TANKA CHALLENGE

My challenge today

is to create a tanka:

verses with five lines.

Who dreams up these sequences

interfering with my flow?

What words of wisdom

can I portray in this way

counting out each line?

A conflict grows within me –

both sides of my brain in gear.

One side at a time

is much easier on me –

being creative,

not facing the challenges

of counting in my left brain.
